Food Is Information: What Functional Medicine Gets Right About Eating

There are so many opinions about food — trends, rules, contradictions — that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. One week a food is “super,” the next week it’s something to avoid. And as someone who has spent years healing, learning, and listening to my body, I’ve realized something simple:

Most of what we’re told about food disconnects us from what our body already knows.

That’s why I’ve always been drawn to the functional medicine approach. It strips away the noise and reconnects us to a powerful truth:

Food is information. Every bite tells your body something.

Your meals aren’t just calories or fuel — they are messages. They tell your hormones how to communicate. They tell your gut which bacteria should thrive. They tell your mitochondria how much energy to produce. They tell your nervous system whether it’s safe to rest and digest.

When we understand this, eating becomes less about perfection and more about partnership.
Your body is always listening — and it’s always responding to what you give it.

🧬 How Your Body “Reads” Food as Information

Your body is incredibly smart. It’s constantly interpreting what’s on your plate and adjusting its systems in real time. Here’s how:

Protein

Your body reads protein as a signal for stability:
• build and repair tissue
• support hormones
• create satiety and reduce cravings
• keep blood sugar steady

Fiber

Fiber feeds the trillions of microbes in your gut — the ones that regulate digestion, immunity, inflammation, and even mood.

Healthy Fats

Your brain is almost 60% fat. Healthy fats nourish hormones, support cognitive function, and create long-lasting energy.

Colorful Plants

Plants are packed with antioxidants and phytonutrients — little messengers that protect your cells, support detoxification, and calm inflammation.

Ultra-Processed Foods

These send your body into stress mode: blood sugar spikes, cortisol rises, and inflammation climbs.

Nothing you eat is neutral — because your body responds to everything.

🔄 Food & Hormones: The Quiet Conversation Happening All Day

Most women I speak with don't realize how deeply food affects their hormones.

Eat a balanced meal with protein, healthy fats, and fiber?
Your body receives a message of stability.

Eat something sugary on an empty stomach or skip meals?
Your body gets a message of panic — cortisol rises, insulin spikes, and hormones scramble to compensate.

The functional medicine lens shows us:

Balanced meals = balanced hormones, balanced mood, balanced energy.
It’s not about restriction. It’s about rhythm.

🌱 Your Gut Microbiome Is Listening Too

This is one of my favorite concepts — because it changed my life and my healing.

You’re not just feeding yourself.
You’re feeding an entire ecosystem inside you.

“You’re feeding trillions of microbes — and they shape everything from digestion to immunity to mood.”

When you eat fiber-rich plants, berries, herbs, greens, prebiotics, and polyphenols, you feed the microbes that help you thrive.

When you eat mostly processed foods, you feed the microbes that create inflammation.

Your microbiome is simply responding to what you give it.
Nourish it, and it nourishes you back.

😌 Your Nervous System & The Safety of Eating

Something we don’t talk about enough:
How you eat matters just as much as what you eat.

You could make the healthiest smoothie, but if you're drinking it while stressed or multitasking, your body won’t absorb the nutrients the same way.

When you sit, breathe, chew, and slow down, you switch into the parasympathetic “rest and digest” state — where digestion actually happens.

If you eat in fight-or-flight mode:
• digestion shuts down
• you don’t absorb nutrients well
• blood sugar is harder to regulate
• cravings increase

You cannot digest when your body doesn’t feel safe.
Functional medicine understands this deeply — and so do our ancestors.

A few slow breaths before eating?
It’s simple, profound medicine.

❤️ Food Is Emotional — and That Matters

Food is connection.
Food is memory.
Food is comfort and culture and celebration.

And this emotional experience has a biological effect.
Positive emotion increases oxytocin — the hormone of safety and bonding — which lowers cortisol and supports digestion.

You don’t have to choose between nourishment and joy.
You get to have both.

⚡ Eating for Energy, Not Exhaustion

Your mitochondria — the tiny factories inside your cells — respond instantly to what you eat.

Nutrient-rich foods say:
“Create energy.”

Ultra-processed foods say:
“Slow down and conserve.”

This is why so many people feel burned out, tired, wired-but-exhausted, or inflamed.

Steady blood sugar is one of the simplest ways to support your energy, hormones, mood, and metabolism. A simple rule I follow (and teach):

Protein + fiber + healthy fat first.
This slows glucose absorption and steadies your whole system.

🌿 What the Functional Medicine Approach Looks Like in Real Life

Functional medicine isn’t rigid.
It’s aware.
It’s curious.
And it’s compassionate.

Here’s what it looks like day to day:

1. No More Morality Around Food

Not “good” or “bad” — simply information.

2. Focus on Blood Sugar Stability

The foundation of energy, hormones, and mood.

3. Eating With Awareness

Put your phone down. Breathe. Taste your food.

4. Feed Your Microbiome

More plants, more color, more diversity.

5. Pattern Over Perfection

What you do daily matters more than what you do occasionally.

🪷 Food Is a Conversation — Not a Test

When we stop thinking of food as a test to pass or fail, something shifts.
We become more intuitive. More grounded. More connected to our bodies’ signals.

“Your body is not trying to make your life difficult — it’s always adapting to the information you give it.”

The question becomes not Is this food good or bad?
The question becomes:

What message is this sending to my body?
And how does it make me feel?

That’s where healing begins.
That’s where clarity lives.
That’s where true nourishment starts.

Food can be medicine.
Food can be grounding.
Food can be connection, joy, and life.
Food can be information that helps your body do what it was designed to do:

heal, restore, repair, and thrive.
